Working with ‘tweens and teens holds a special place in my heart. I’d argue that this may be the most complex period of growth for most humans — the whole world is turned upside down physically, mentally, and emotionally. I’ve yet to meet an adult who wishes they could relive those middle school years 😉
Providing a safe space to talk through ALL the emotions and experiences of adolescence (and of parenting an adolescent!) with someone who gets it can make it feel less overwhelming. I truly believe it’s one of the greatest gifts we can give our kids. If your child isn’t thrilled with the idea of talking to a therapist, THAT’S OKAY!! It’s completely normal for young people to feel ambivalent about coming to therapy, or to push back, so I do my best to make it fun, safe, and meaningful, even if they don’t want to be there. We may sit and talk, make art, create a sand tray, play a game, chat about school drama and how “cringe” adults can be — whatever helps them feel comfortable while we explore life’s ups and downs.
When ‘tweens and teens feel safe, connected, and respected, they are more open to working through their “stuff” — and as their parent or caregiver, you are a big part of the process! Family sessions are a great opportunity to build skills for open and honest communication, learn how to really listen to each other, and work through conflict in a way that actually strengthens the relationship.
Kind Therapy Austin is a safe space to explore all aspects of identity, self-image, and relationships. It is an honor and privilege to support individuals who are learning more about themselves and may be in the LGBTQIA+ community. We are committed to their safety and confidentiality above all else.
